| Techniques and Materials The
main material I use is paper pulp, a very basic substance which
can be strong and at the same time fragile, transitory and light
. Paper soaked in water returns to its essence, its fibers. When
the fibers have dried, their form, shape and purpose become my medium. The
pulp lends itself to expressing life's base force, its movement
and rhythm. Pulp has flowing qualities, inner movement , an ability
to record and a purpose to retain the memory of imprints. I cast,
mold and imbed with paper pulp, working with texture, relief and
three dimensions, layering and scraping, stripping and adding. Other
mediums such as plant matter and collected objects are imbedded
in surfaces. I paint with layers of washes using acrylics and pigments.
For example, in “Renewal”, the fragile shell form suggests the individual
seeking to merge with the infinite. In “Tree cycles”, symbols and bones
are painted in acrylic over layers of dyed pulp. In “Waterfall”,
I have shaped pulp and imbedded long banana fibers into waves painted
and imprinted with acrylics.
I also use many printing methods, often directly into the wet pulp,
printing with rollers and natural materials. In the painting, “Ant’s
World”, this technique was applied to different colored pulps, the
central panel being the lightest and the focus.
